Trinidad and Tobago's T'Shelle Barnes, Asia-Lee Waller and Liam Rajkumar secured their respective age-group singles titles when the Caribbean Regional Badminton Confederation (Carebaco) Championship Junior Individual competitions hosted by the Jamaica Badminton Association (JBA) ended at the University of Technology (UTECH) Auditorium in Kingston, Jamaica on Tuesday.
In the Girls' Under-19 singles championship match, Barnes had to come from behind to beat Alix Orgaer 23-25, 21-18, 21-19.
Earlier in the semifinals, Barnes beat Barbadian Xian Trotman 21-13, 21-17 while fellow T&T player Isabelle Waller lost out to Orgaer in an entertaining contest 21-15, 11-21, 10-21.
In the quarterfinals, Barnes slammed Zion Cooper 21-4, 21-6, and Waller blasted Janice Han 21-10, 21-6 while T&T's Cheyenne Bhole was booted by Orgaer 14-21, 9-21 and Tenniya Tobias was denied by Trotman 18-21, 20-22.
In the Girls doubles, Barnes and Isabelle Waller fell one victory short of another title, falling to Barbadians Sahara Brathwaite and Xian Trotman 17-21, 16-21 in a virtual round-robin title-decider.
The pair of Barnes and Waller had earlier beaten teammates Cheyenne Bhola and Tenniya Tobias 21-18, 21-19 and Zion Cooper and Janice Han 21-7, 21-5.
Bhola and Tobias were also beaten by Nina Aguer and Allix Orgaer 15-21, 12-21 but won their final match over Cooper and Han 21-12, 21-14, to finish in the fourth spot.
In the Boys U-19 singles, T&T's Nicholi Jedbodsingh got bronze after his loss in the semifinals 9-21, 16-21 to Nicolas Hertogh after he scolded Guadeloupe's Mael Poulin 21-14, 21-9 in their quarterfinal.
Jedbodsingh and Ethan Ramcharan also got bronze in the Boys doubles after losing their semis to Keryan Bilas and Nicolas Hertogh 17-21, 19-21.
In the mixed doubles semifinals, Ramcharan and Barnes were stopped by Nicolas Hertogh and Alix Orgaer 14-21, 10-21 while Jedbodsingh and Waller were humbled by Bilas and Nina Aguer 9-21, 18-21.
Waller, Rajkumar claim U-15 double crowns
T&T's Asia-Lee Waller completed a successful step up to the U-15 Girls singles when she dismissed Barbadian Isabelle Wood in their final 21-13, 21-13.
Earlier in the semifinals, Waller ousted Ella-Belle Palmer 21-11, 21-11 while teammate Rishelle Boodoosingh was beaten by Wood 17-21, 15-21. In the quarterfinals, Waller punished Ariana Fingall 21-8, 21-5 and Boodoosingh defeated Leeya Dileep 21-5, 21-14
Waller then combined with Boodoosingh to capture the Girls' U-15 doubles round-robin title with wins over Barbadians Ariana Fingall and Isabelle Wood 21-8, 21-4; Jamaicans Leeya Dileep and Ella Belle Palmer 21-9, 21-6 as well as teammates Kai Jan and Samara Lalwah 21-6, 21-6 for a 4-0 record.
Jan and Lalwah beat Zuri Anderson and Nahla Mattai 21-19, 21-19 and also fell to Dileep and Palmer 14-21, 14-21 in their other matches to take the third spot, ahead of the Barbadians.
Rajkumar followed the same path as Waller as he captured the Boys U-15 singles crown by beating countryman and top-seeded player Naveer Salick 21-11, 21-9 in the title match.
In the final four, Rajkumar slammed Javan Ramjass 21-11, 21-13 and Salick beat Aidyn Goddard 21-18, 22-20 in all-T&T clashes.
Earlier in the quarterfinals, Rajkumar whipped Ethan Grant 21-8, 21-8; Salick downed Jaden Huang 21-11, 21-7; Goddard won against Kai Blackman 18-21, 21-16, 23-21 and Ramjass crushed Barbadian Ari Boyce 21-15, 21-4.
Rajkumar and Salick then combined to capture the Boys' doubles crown after they got past countrymen Goddard and Javan Ramjass 21-16, 22-20 and Barbadians Kai Blackman and Ari Boyce 21-14, 21-9 in their final two matches for a 3-0 record.
Goddard and Ramjass rebounded from the loss against their countrymen to defeat Ethan Grant and Jaden Huang 21-10, 21-13 for the silver medals.
However, in the mixed doubles decider, Salick and Boodoosingh denied Rajkumar and Waller the triple crown with an enthralling 17-21, 22-20, 21-16 triumph.
In the semifinals, Salick and Boodoosingh beat Barbadians Boyce and Ariana Fingall 21-6, 21-10 and Rajkumar and Waller defeated Javan Ramjass and Kaia Jan 21-17, 21-8 to set up an all-T&T final.
Orie, Rajkumar cop U-17 girls doubles title
T&T's Tanvi Orie and Kayleigh Rajkumar won against countrywomen Kenise Gangoo and Samiya Karim 21-9, 21-6 to claim the Girls Doubles round-robin gold and silver medals, respectively, with 4-0 and 3-1 records.
In their early matches, Orie and Rajkumar won against Gabrielle Barlow and Ruth-Ann Nembhard 21-5, 21-5; Abigail Harvey and Sue-Ann Ogle 21-19, 16-21, 22-20 as well as Amarrissa Chambers and Kiana Rhodes 21-8, 21-2 and Gangoo and Karim 21-9, 21-9.
Gangoo and Karim beat Abigail Harvey and Sue-Ann Ogle 21-16, 21-17; and Barlow and Nembhard 21-3, 21-3 in their other matches.
In the singles, Karim came up one win short of lifting the crown when she was beaten by Barbadian Sahara Brathwaite 21-12, 18-21, 9-21.
In the final-four, Karim upstaged top-ranked Nina Aguer 21-15, 21-14 to back up her quarterfinal win over compatriot Gangoo 21-12, 21-11 while Orie fell to Harvey 21-15, 12-21, 20-22 and Rajkumar was booted by Brathwaite 12-21, 8-21.
In the Boys singles, T&T's Liam Persad was stopped in the semifinals by Amir Mc Bean 11-21, 13-21
Persad earlier won his quarterfinal 21-13, 21-17 over Barbadian Xavi Haynes but team-mate Ethan Jitmansingh was outlasted by Barbadian Isaiah Hinds 16-21, 21-13, 18-21
In the mixed doubles semifinals, T&T's Chikioke Kalu and Gangoo lost out to Matheus Smith and Sue-Ann Ogle 14-21, 19-21
Kalu and Gangoo peppered Joseph Graham and Ruth-Ann Nembhard 21-14, 21-3 in their quarterfinal, but Matheus Smith and Ogle beat T&T's Ankit Singh and Orie 21-12, 21-17.
And in the Boys' doubles final, Jitmansingh and Kalu came up short against Mc Bean and Smith 13-21, 16-21.
In the semifinals, Jitmansingh and Kalu also battled past Haynes and Isaiah Hinds 21-12, 22-20. Jitmansingh and Kalu won their quarterfinal against Steven Chung and Timothy Loffler 21-12, 21-16 but compatriots Persad and Singh were halted by Mc Bean and Smith 6-21, 7-21.
T&T cop U-11 boys, girls doubles titles
The T&T pair of Michael Balvin and Evan Ghuran won the U-11 Boys doubles while Kenaiya Gangoo and Devonnye Vincent cop the U-11 Girls doubles crown.
Balvin and Ghuran won courtesy a 21-14, 21-17 defeat of T&T's Amarion Callender and Stanislas Montout in their decider.
Earlier in the day, Balvin had to settle for the Boys U-11 singles silver medal following a 9-21, 10-21 loss to Barbadian Lyam Clarke in their age-group final after beating Zamani Allen 21-11, 21-19 in his semifinal.
T&T's Evan Ghuran was beaten by Montout 9-21, 10-21 in the quarterfinal, and Callender proved no match for Zamani Allen 11-21, 5-21.
In the Girls U-11 Doubles round-robin, Gangoo and Vincent steamrolled Jillian Yap and Wynter Zhang 21-12, 21-14 and Barbadians Zaria Mayers and Kayleigh Woodley 21-7, 21-10 for a perfect 4-0 record while T&T's Lashauna Ifill-Trancoso and Weiting Lin beat Jessica Blake and Emma-Rae Palmer 21-5, 21-8 and Yap and Zhang 21-12. 21-14 to end with the silver medals with a 3-1 record
However, in the U-11 Girls singles final, Vincent was humbled by Bajan Yazmyn Eastmond 14-21, 9-21. This was after Vincent beat Zaria Mayers 21-12, 21-5 in her semifinal while Gangoo was beaten by Eastmond 9-21, 5-21. In the mixed doubles final, top-seeded Balvin and Vincent went under to Clarke and Eastmond 15-21, 17-21.
When the semifinals came off, Balvin and Vincent toppled Montout and Lin 21-17, 21-15. Earlier in the quarterfinals, Callender and Ifill-Trancoso were overwhelmed by Montout and Ling 13-21, 4-21, while Ghuran and Gangoo were knocked off by Clarke and Eastmond 15-21, 6-21.
There were also bronze medals in the U-13 Girls' doubles for Gia Ghuran and Arya Mansook as well as in mixed doubles, for Mansook and Barbadian Liam Bruce.
