T&T's Leah Bertrand broke the sub-11 barrier for the women's 100 metres when she sped to a wind-aided (+3.9m/s) 10.94 seconds on the final day at the Texas Relays at the Mike A. Myers Stadium, Austin, Texas, USA Saturday.
Bertrand's clocking was set as she finished second in the women's finals. American Indya Mayberry of TCU was first to the line in 10.91. Tarleton State's Victoria Cameron was third (11.09). In the preliminaries, the previous day, Bertrand clocked 11.34 (+0.8 m/s) in winning heat three. Mayberry (11.22) topped the preliminary round.
Though Bertrand's 10.94 would not be recognised as a personal best as the wind reading was over the legally allowable limit of 2.0 m/s, the 2024 Paris Olympic semifinalist joined the exclusive club of T&T sprinters to below the 11-second barriers. The reigning national champion is among the local elite women's runners with national record holder Michelle-Lee Ahye leading the way with 10.82 (+0.9m/s) and former record-holder Kelly-Ann Baptiste with 10.84 (+1.8m/s).
Bertrand's legal best is 11.08, which ranks her joint fifth on the T&T all-time list with Fana Ashby. However, the Point Fortin native can now look forward to legally cracking the 11-second barrier.
Her 11.34 run in the heats put the 22-year-old at 17th on the World list and is the top local for this season so far. She is ahead of juniors Sanaa Frederick (11.49), Alexxe Henry (11.58) and 22-year-old Taejha Badal (11.61).
Bertrand also raced in the 4x100m relay and her Ohio State team placed 12th with 45.18.
