T&T golfers competed in the 7th annual Whan Tong Agencies & Delta sponsored T&T clubs team championship on Saturday at the St Andrews Golf Course, Moka, Maraval.
The competition is unique in its format in that the Golf Clubs must nominate 10 golfers from all categories of golfers. Each team must include at least two from nine handicaps and below, two from 10-16 handicap, two from 17-24 handicap, two from 25 -36 handicap and at least one woman and one junior. The eight best Stableford scores from each team were added together to arrive at the winner.
Teams from Brechin Castle, Chagaramus, Leewards, Millennium Lakes, Pointe-a-Pierre, Usine St Madeleine and St Andrews golf club all participated and as usual to engender the team spirit the sponsors outfitted each team with its own coloured polo shirts.
The tournament was played under blue skies and sunlight on a well-manicured golf course, and home course knowledge did not prove the decisive factor this year as Brechin Castle finished with 245 points to place first. Millennium Lakes totalled 236 points to secure second place, Chaguaramas finished third with 228 and Leewards G.C from Tobago came in fourth behind 226 points with defending champions Pointe-a-Pierre followed in fifth after managing 223 points. The host St Andrews ended sixth with 205 points while newcomers Usine St Madeleine had to settle for the seventh position with its 188 points.
The individual winner was Carlos Beckles from The Leewards club who had 36 Stableford points, while the best junior was Yeji Lee on 34 points winning on a countback from Chris Richards Jnr.
The sponsors Whan Tong Agencies and Delta gave out prizes to each one of the 10 members of the first placed team Brechin Castle and another 10 great prizes to the second placed team Millennium Lakes.
The TTGA President thanked the sponsors Whan Tong Agencies and Delta for their continued sponsorship and indicated that as the tournament moves around from club to the club next year 2019 version will hopefully be held in Tobago.
