Dozens of runners from T&T’s financial sector will lay siege on the Queen’s Park Savannah Thursday for the 33rd edition of the Carifin Games’ One Lap Savannah run which will start opposite Victoria Avenue (TGI Friday) at 5 pm.
The lineup of the sector’s athletic elite includes powerhouse teams from Republic Bank Limited (RBL), Scotiabank, Central Bank (CBTT), Sagicor, First Citizens, Eastern Credit Union, Ministry of Finance, and Unit Trust Corporation. With fierce competition and friendly rivalries, the race is charged with anticipation as the current men’s walking champion, Brian Jeremie of Team CBTT, who swept all four walking events in 2023, has his eyes set not only on defending his title but also on delivering a grand showdown against the five-time champion from First Citizens, Deodath Harrikissoon. Meanwhile, Harrikissoon is striding back onto the scene for another victory. This clash promises to be the highlight of the evening.
On the women’s side, it is not any less tense with Tessa Weeks of Republic Bank, a four-time walking champion, back, aiming to reclaim her crown from reigning two-time winner, Kadesha Charles of the team (RBL).
The running category is ablaze with hopeful, history-making potential for One Lap Savannah. Abijah Phillip of team RBL, fresh from his 2023 victory, stands on the cusp of an unprecedented fourth win. Yet, formidable contenders emerge in teammates, Shay Gonzales and Clinton Williams from Scotiabank, both filled with aspirations of glory and near victories.
Adding to the spectacle, missing past champions sets the stage for epic battles and exciting contests. Sagicor’s reigning women’s running champion is missing in action as she is sidelined with an injury, leaving the women’s category wide open and the title of ‘Women Running Champion’ up for grabs. This promises new One Lap legends and possibly the birth of a new champion, as seasoned contenders and fresh talent vie for the crown.
However, beyond the physical feats, the Carifin Games One Lap Savannah serves a greater purpose- a portion of every registration fee is generously donated to the Vice of Lupus Foundation, intertwining the event’s competitive spirit with a commitment to giving back and fostering community resilience.
Nigel Edwards, Executive Director of Unit Trust Corporation remarks, “The One Lap Savannah, as part of the Carifin Urban Challenge, symbolizes the strength and resilience of our financial sector community.” Edwards eloquently captured the event’s core principles, a commitment to health, and fitness, and the invaluable network woven through shared sweat and aspirations. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of competition, camaraderie, and the relentless pursuit of excellence that defines the financial services community.
As contenders take their marks, the air tingles with anticipation, community spirit, and the palpable excitement of competition.
