Men's A champion Nabeel Mohammed made a perfect start in the East Clubs Classified Tennis Tournament on Tuesday at the National Racquet Centre (NRC) in Tacarigua.
Mohammed considered the most technically sound player in T&T, took two sets to dispose of Ronald Robinson on court two 6-2, 6-3 to advance to round two of the tournament. And later third seed Richard Chung, who secured a place on the country's Davis Cup team recently, made light work out of Kino Francis 6-4, 6-0, while Ebolum N'Wokolo took care of Aaron Woodford on the nearby court one 6-4, 7-5 for a second-round spot.
In another game, Kevin Naidoo also booked his place in round two with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Daniel Youseff.
Rhonda Mohammed was the lone Women's A player to take the court on Tuesday and she cruised to the second round without breaking a sweat 6-0, 6-0 against Mignon King.
Afterwards, she looked on as Men's B action saw Saqiv Williams dismissing Frank Ramudit in straight sets 6-1, 6-2, and Praveen Kumar defeating Karl Woods 6-0, 6-3 for their passage into the second round. Randy Bailey also prevailed over Marc Lessey 6-2, 6-1 and Kumar Sookram triumphed after a gutsy battle with Mukesh Ramsingh 5-7, 6-0, 10-2. But the second round of the tournament also welcomed Narad Ramsingh and Hayden Salim, both of whom had walk-over victories over Ken Aberdeen and Prakash Ragbir respectively.
Action in the tournament continued yesterday at the same venue.
