The Metro Hotel Chetwynd End of Year Open Singles Tennis Tournament will serve off today with action in the Men’s A and B Divisions, the Ladies Open, and Men’s Over 45 at the club’s court on Upper St Vincent Street in Tunapuna.
Akiel Duke, the winner of the men’s open the last time the tournament was held back in 2021, will not be among the participants due to injury, however, Keshan Moonasar, the beaten finalist, will have to wait until next weekend to begin his quest for precious metal.
Today, top seed Kevon Baptiste will be hoping for a perfect start against Keyan Goodridge in the B division, while in the A division, Stefon Ramsingh will clash with Adisa Idemudia, and Nabeel Mohammed will have a date with Kyle Britton.
In another A division encounter Kristyan Valentine, who came from a set down to upset top seed Denzil Clement in the boys Under-18 Singles final of the Eighth Annual TECU Junior Tennis Tournament at Petrotrin Tennis Club, Pointe-a-Pierre on Sunday earlier this year, will come up against Justin Horsford.
The top two players in each group will advance to the semifinals, which will be followed by the finals.
There will also be action among the ladies with Savi Singh up against the enterprising Sherisse Arjoon and organiser Sarah Salandy hoping to capitalize on the prizes at stake when she faces Charlene Telesford.
In 2021, from a two-division competition for women, the ‘A’ title was won by former national star Shenelle Mohammed who got the better of Jaeda-Lee Daniel-Joseph in the final. Em Miryam Campbell-Smith took the title for the Ladies B division by whipping Gabriella Prince in another hotly-contested final match.
Zachary Byng, who gave a credible showing at the recent International Tennis Federation’s (ITF) Junior Tournament’s J60 Barbados in Bridgetown last week, was the winner of the Men’s B Division back in 2021.
