T&T’s Kale Dalla Costa and Jordane Dookie both advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective Boys and Girls Singles when the second leg of the International Tennis Federation J60 Under-18 Tournament continued at the National Racquet Centre in Tacarigua, Tuesday.
Dalla Costa was made to work for his spot in the last eight as he registered a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win over Brazilian Joao Marcos Angelico and will next face Turkey’s Samim Filiz, who beat USA’s Gadin Arun in their round-of-16 encounter.
Dalla Costa then returned later in the evening and paired with Colombian Pablo Robledo Hoyos to defeat T&T duo, Zachery Byng and B’jorn Hall 6-1, 6-3 in their Boys Doubels last-16 match and next face Americans Brady Friesen, and James Andrew Ross who got past USA’s Josh Bitton, and Brazilian Bernardo Tedesco 7-6(6), 6-2.
Also advancing in the Doubles were T&T’s Nathen Martin and Liam Byrne of Canada after they defeated locals Nirav Dougdeen and Deron Dumas 6-2, 6-1.
In the Girls’ Under-18 main draw round-of-16, Dookie who captured her sixth ITF Junior last week on home soil with Doubles partner Kayla Brianne Moore, made light work of USA’s Aqeela Malik, winning 6-1, 6-2 and will face off with seventh-ranked USA’s Ciara Harding who denied Em-Miryam Campbell-Smith a spot in an all-T&T match-up with a 6-2, 6-0 beating.
Dookie is already through to the last eight of the Doubles with partner Daisy Clifford courtesy of a bye and awaits the winner of last night’s match-up between T&T’s Cameron Wong and partner Savanna Salahuddin-Wright against American duo, Malik, and Sydney Wright.
However, in the other Doubles matches completed up to press time involving locally based players, USA’s Sophia Budacsek and Isabella Pisarczyk ousted Julie George-Alexander of Antigua and Barbuda, and T&T’s Shiloh Walker 6-1, 6-2 while North Americans, Sharada Gowda and Ariana Ikwueme humbled Mohammed sisters, Lilly and Naomi 6-3, 6-0.
T&T’s Campbell-Smith and Natalia Tkachenko were carded to face USA’s Harding and Tejaswini Narala, and Kiera Youssef and Venezuelan Ana Sanchez met Canada’s Anvika Saraswathi and Anya Taylor of Great Britain.
And in the boys’ Aaron Subero and Lucas Davis of Barbados met Filiz, and China’s Hanlei Lu; Luca Denoon and Anthony Abbott of the USA battled Brazil’s Bernardo Costa and Hayden Grech of Canada.
