T&T’s Kale Dalla Costa and Jordane Dookie were both dumped out at their respective boys' and girls' singles quarterfinal stage but won in the doubles when the second leg of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) J60 Under-18 Tournament continued at the National Racquet Centre in Tacarigua, Wednesday.
Dalla Costa made a slow start against Turkey’s Samim Filiz but in the end went under in three sets 2-6, 7-6(3), 2-6.
There was much better news in the doubles for Dalla Costa and Colombian Pablo Robledo Hoyos as they beat Americans Brady Friesen, and James Andrew Ross 7-5, 6-4 for a spot in the semifinals against Filiz and Hanlei Lu of China who defeated T&T’s Nathen Martin and Liam Byrne of Canada 7-5, 6-3 in another quarterfinal.
In the girls’ Under-18 main draw, the third-ranked Dookie who captured her sixth ITF Junior last week on home soil with doubles partner Kayla Brianne Moore, was guilty of too many unforced errors and suffered a straightforward loss to USA's Ciara Harding 2-6, 0-6 in their last-eight clash.
It was the second straight quarterfinal exit in the Singles competition on home soil for the top locally ranked Dookie after a similar outing in the first-leg event at the same venue.
However, she had much better fortune in the last-eight of the doubles with partner Daisy Clifford as they downed Americans Aqeela Malik and Sydney Wright 6-4, 7-5 to reach the final four where they wiill face USA's Gianna Graci and Canada's Sienna Miles.
In the other semifinal, Ciara Harding and Tejaswini Narala, both of the USA meet fellow Americans, Sophia Budacsek and Isabella Pisarczyk.
On Tuesday night, T&T's Em-Miryam Campbell-Smith and USA's Natalia Tkachenko were beaten by Harding and Tejaswini Narala of the USA 0-6, 1-6; T&T's Kiera Youssef and Venezuelan Ana Sanchez went under to Canada’s Anvika Saraswathi and Anya Taylor of Great Britain, 1-6, 0-6 and in the boys' competition, Aaron Subero and Lucas Davis of Barbados were humbled by Filiz, and China’s Hanlei Lu 0-6, 1-6 while Luca Denoon and Anthony Abbott of the USA were defeated by Brazil’s Bernardo Costa and Hayden Grech of Canada 7-6(6), 1-6, 3-10.
