Number one seed Kino Francis has booked a crucial meeting with Darren Alexander for the right to advance to the quarterfinals of the Chetwynd End of Year Tennis Tournament at the club's court on Tunapuna Road, Tunapuna.
Francis, who was served with an easy first-round match against veteran Gary Siewdass on Sunday last, did not disappoint, disposing of his opponent in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 to stay on course for his first Chetwynd Men's Singles title. That encounter will be played at a date and time to be determined.
Apart from that encounter, a number of other matches will take place on the weekend with quarterfinal spots at stake. Among the is, second-seed Aaron Woolford, a comfortable winner in his first match the weekend before last, taking care of Askia Richards for the right to meet Vaughn Martin to be among the final eight.
Also bidding for quarterfinal spot will be Rendell Ackie and fourth-seed Kevon Baptiste. Ackie came from a set down 4-6, to overcome the challenge of Stefon Ramsingh 6-3 and 10-5 in the super tie-break, while Ackie played the game of his life to turn back Robert Caesar in two sets 6-3, 6-1.
Ackie will now come up against Ramsingh while Baptiste will have a date with Kendon Cornwall. The latter was also victorious over the last weekend by comfortably disposing of Randy Bailey 6-3, 6-3.
Meanwhile, the final of the Ladies Singles is set for a showdown between defending champion Farrah Chautilal and Sarah Salandy, both of whom were successful at the weekend.
That final will take place at a date to be decided, officials have said. Meanwhile, the Mixed Doubles play-offs will also begin this weekend, with Salandy and Francis forming an almost unstoppable force.
