West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel has accepted his ban from the ICC and will serve it out according to head coach of the Windies team, Richard Pybus.
Speaking to Guardian Media Sports yesterday, Pybus said, "Shannon has accepted the penalty. He will have to sit out either two Tests or four One Day matches."
With the Windies playing England in five One Day Internationals, Gabriel cannot be selected until the fifth match. If the Windies had Test matches before then he would have missed two Test matches.
He also misses out on 75 per cent of his match fee and gets three demerit points which push him over the limit.
The La Romaine player is no stranger to reaching the match referee's door, as he was previously given three demerit points in April 2017 for making deliberate physical contact with Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed and another two in November last year against Bangladesh. Having accumulated more than four points, he was banned for the following Test in Dhaka.
He has now reached eight demerit points within the same two-year period which converts to four suspension points, equivalent to a ban from two Tests or four limited-overs internationals.
Towards the end of play on the third day of the third and final Wisden Test at the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground in St Lucia, Root was picked up by the stump mic saying to Gabriel: "Don't feel insulted but there is nothing wrong with being gay."
This has provoked great support for the Yorkshireman back home with a number of groups in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community in Britain saying that he is a great role model for his response and support of the LGBT community.
England won the Test match by 232 runs on the fourth day. However, the West Indies won the Wisden Trophy for the first time in ten years after the team won the series 2-1, following a victory by 381 runs in Barbados and by 10 wickets in Antigua. West Indies pacer Kemar Roach was named "Man of the Series".
