After narrowly missing out on a win in the boys’ under-20 100-metre final the day before, where he was edged out by his brother, Kadeem Chinapoo, Hakeem Chinapoo returned to the track at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella with purpose. And he made it count.

On the final day of the Carifta Trials, Chinapoo bounced back spectacularly, clocking a blazing 21.14 seconds in the boys’ under-20 200 metres final, well under the Carifta standard of 21.74, to secure his place among the athletes set to represent Trinidad and Tobago at the upcoming Carifta Games over the Eastern weekend (April 19-21).

The race was stacked with talent, and Chinapoo wasn’t the only one to step up. Four other sprinters also made the standard time, turning the final into one of the most competitive events of the day. Daeshaun Cole ran 21.26, followed closely by Trevaughn Stewart in 21.55, Ben Israel Bannister with 21.60, and Zaccheus Charles clocking 21.74.

In the younger category, the boys’ under-17 200-metre final also delivered fireworks. All top three finishers made the Carifta standard of 22.22. Jayden Goodridge powered through with the fastest time of 21.61, followed closely by Alex Seepersad in 21.66 and Kamari Diaz in 21.98. Interestingly, all three had already hit the qualifying time in their semi-final runs, confirming their consistency and readiness.

On the girls’ side, Mikayla Granderson showed great promise in the under-17 category. She made the qualifying mark in her preliminary run but missed it in the final, finishing first in 24.78, mere hundredths of a second shy of the 24.74 standard. Right behind her were Zada Charles (25.05) and Chelcia Joseph (25.05), both pushing hard to the finish line.

In the girls’ under-20 200-metre preliminaries, four athletes made early statements by hitting the standard: Sierra Joseph (24.10), Kayla Charles (24.15), Akira Malabar (24.30), and Noemi Theodore (24.39). They returned for the final and proved it wasn’t a fluke, as all four again clocked under the standard. Joseph finished in 24.26, Charles in 24.36, Malabar in 24.53, and Theodore in 24.61—solidifying their spots on the national team.

Among the standout performances of the day were last year’s medal winners, the Vincent siblings, Tenique and Tyrique.

Tennique Vincent placed first in the girl’s heptathlon open, while Tyrique dominated in all his events to place first in the boys under-20 decathlon.

In the hurdles, Durlaina Rouse and Zariah Pascall cleared the Carifta standard in the under-17 girls’ 400m hurdles, while Jenna-Marie Thomas and Natalia Eastman did the same in the under-20 division. Thomas, a silver medallist from last year’s games in Grenada, spoke on what she hopes to accomplish at the games.

“I wouldn’t put anything spectacular out there, but I will definitely be getting on the podium in my events to represent my country well, my mother, and my coaches,” she said.

Distance events brought their excitement. In the girls’ 3000-metre open run, O’Shea Cummings stole the show with a commanding performance, crushing the standard of 11:33.78 by clocking 10:35.08.

Guardian Media Sport caught up with Cummings after her impressive victory, where she had this to say.

“I cross the Carifta standard by a big margin, and going into the Carifta Games, I would like to go for the gold and go for the Carifta record,” she said.

Aniqah Bailey, who placed second, also earned her place with a strong time of 11:11.98.

In the boys’ under-17 3000 metres, both Sammy Christopher (9:13.35) and Armani Dillion (9:19.20) made the standard, showcasing great potential in endurance events.

The final distance event of the day, the boys’ under-20 5000 metres, saw Darius Harding rise to the occasion. He crossed the line in 15:56.99, comfortably under the 16:53.49 standard. He was followed by Isaiah Alder (16:37.06) and Jayden Alexander (16:50.07), both also meeting the required mark.

The focus now shifts to the Carifta Games that begin on Saturday, 19th April.
