Sprinter Alexxe Henry and field athlete Payton Winter were among several athletes from 95 schools that won double gold medals on day one of the Secondary Schools Track and Field’s (SSTF) National Championships at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet Tobago on Wednesday.
Henry of Signal Hill Secondary School sprinted to victory in the Girls Under-17 100 metres dash with a time of 11.95 seconds and went under the qualifying time of 12.04 (-0.2) for the upcoming Carifta Games in Nassau, Bahamas. She beat to the line, respectively, Symphony Patrick of St George’s College with 12.30 and Destinee Thomas of Vessigny Government with 12.79.
Later, Henry ran the anchor leg for Signal Hill and won gold in the girls’ U-17 4x100m relay. The Signal Hill quartet of Angel Davidson, Keshelle Phillip, Qjhea Stewart and Henry, running in that order, clocked 51.54 to finish ahead of second-placed Holy Name Convent Port-of-Spain’s Malana Patrick, Leah Abraham, Sadie Hamlet and Jennesia Allamby (53.72) and Scarborough Secondary’s Keliscia Ross, Neveah Hernandez, J’Leisha Alexander and Alisha Sampson (53.87).
Henry’s teammate Stewart also nabbed double gold, earlier winning the girls’ U-17 400m final with 1:00.53 in front of Signal Hill teammate Angel Davidson (1:02.59) and Bishop East’s Kamilla Swan (1:03.84).
Their golden efforts helped Signal Hill close day one on top of the rankings, through 105 events with a combined team score of 219 points, narrowly ahead of Roxborough (218) and Scarborough (217) in second and third places, respectively.
Winter, meanwhile, shined on the field, sealing three medals - two gold and a bronze- in the girl’s U-17 category.
The San Juan South field athlete’s winning effort of 13.36m in the shot put, saw her go past the Carifa standard of 12.15m while beating Scarborough’s Neveah Hernandez (10.16m) into second place and in third, Vanaleesia Joseph of Pentecostal Light & Life Foundation (9.72m).
In the discus, Winter’s best throw measured 29.18m to comfortably win against Mia King (Roxborough), the silver medallist with 19.63m and bronze medallist Maquada Moore (Bon Air) with 17.41m.
Winter was third in the javelin throw, behind another double gold-medallist Tenique Vincent of Woodbrook (26.95m) and Roxborough’s Lory Clarke (23.80m).
Vincent also reached the top of the podium in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.18 ahead of Holy Faith Couva’s Kewes Gomes (15.58) and Signal Hill’s Oshea Cabie (18.39), respectively.
Lalenii Grant of Scarborough, also excelled on the field as well, winning the girls’ 17-plus (17+) discus throw with 39.86m, also achieving the Carifta qualifying mark (39.57m).
