National cricketer Akeal Hosein was voted Senior Club Personality of the Year at Queen’s Park Cricket Club’s Annual Awards Function at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port-of-Spain, on Friday night.
Members and club officials braved the inclement weather to show up for the glitzy affair as they celebrated with Hosein, who was able to nose ahead of all the other nominees from the different sporting disciplines played by club members.
Table tennis player Derron Douglas won the Junior Club Personality of the Year award.
Hosein, a club member since he was 14, has developed into one of the top all-rounders in the region and in the club. Since making his TTCB Premiership debut in 2010, he has scored 4109 runs, taken 362 wickets and has represented T&T at the Under-17, Under-19 and senior regional competitions.
In 2019, he continued to be one of the club’s top performers, scoring 532 runs with an average of 48.4, a high score of 151 not out and 57 wickets at an average of 11.49 and an economy rate of 3.03, which included three five-wicket hauls in an innings haul.
Hosein’s most outstanding moment of the club season came when he scored the 151 not out against Clarke Road, after his team, chasing 340 for first-innings points, was reduced to 267 for nine. Then, he batted through the innings to see the team declare with the score on 416-9. This innings was watched by the T&T chairman of selectors Anthony Gray, who rated it as one of the best he had seen during his playing career and earned Hosein a retainer contract with the T&T Red Force for the 2019/2020 season.
He was also selected and played for the Trinbago Knight Riders team in the 2019 Caribbean Premier League and is currently for the T&T Red Force in the Colonial Super50 competition.
Douglas, on the other hand, is just 14 years and has been a standout table tennis player, winning gold at the Caribbean Under-21 championships. He also took gold at the Under-15 and Under-18 levels. His performances have not gone unnoticed and he is currently ranked first in the country in the Boys’ U-18 division. Among all players in the country, he has attained a rank of fifth, which is commendable for his age.
Hosein and Douglas were able to trump a number of very talented Parkites who were nominated for awards. Winning the prestigious Kingston Trophy for service to the club over the past year was Matthew Leach.
With his days of playing football in Sky Blue and even serving as captain of the team behind him, Matthew has turned his focus to behind the scenes. Chairing the football section, he oversees the 8-a-side tournament, men’s and ladies’ teams. He is also heavily involved in the Youth Academy and helps coordinate various aspects of fundraising and tours for the young players.
