The duos Sadie Torkar and Bianca Perkins (women) and Josiah Jankey and his brother Jeremiah Jankey (men) won the second legs of their respective T&T Volleyball Federation (TTVF) Trinbago Beach Volleyball Tour Under-21 Division Tournaments at Mission Beach, Toco, on Sunday.
In the ten-team women’s double-elimination tournament, Torkar and Perkins, winners of the opening lead of the Under-23 age group in January, played unbeaten over the two days of competition to secure their second title of the season.
Starting off in the main draw, Torkar and Perkins swept past Khalifa Barrimond and Kaitlyn Rampersad 21-4, 21-12 in the second round before battling past opening leg Under-21 champions Jessica Castagne-Hay and Skye La Fon 21-16, 17-21, 15-9, followed by a straightforward triumph against Aliyah Urquhart and Jenissa Morrison 21-15, 21-13 to set up a title match with losers’ draw victors Barrimond and Rampersad, which they won after dropping the first set, 16-21, 21-16, 15-6.
The pair of Barrimond and Rampersad rebounded from the main draw opening loss to the eventual winners to beat Ximara Phillip and Destiny Narcis 21-13, 21-13 in their Losers Draw second round match; Kamili Banfield and Raylee Hart 21-10, 21-13; and Castagne-Hay and La Fon 21-16, 21-18 in the Losers final, before rallying past Urquhart and Morrison 19-21, 21-18, 15-8 in the semifinal.
The men’s Under-21 decider also went the full distance with the Jankey brothers battling past Jerome Morrison and his cousin Jadon Morrison 22-20, 16-21, and 15-11.
Meanwhile, in the semifinals, the Jankeys eased past Rayon Dickson and Michael McCarthy 21-11, 21-8, while the Morrisons outclassed Shilon Millet and Joshua Burnley 21-11, 23-21.
Earlier in the quarter-finals, the Jankeys won by default from Darion Sparks and Josie Cedeno by default (21-0, 21-0); Dickson and Mc Carthy also won by default over Khyle Wooding and Dylan Joseph by default (21-0, 21-0), while Millet and Burnley ousted Jadon James and Emmanuel Newsum 21-9, 21-11, and the Morrisons were on a bye.
Millet and Burnley secured the bronze medal courtesy of their closely fought win over Dickson and McCarthy, 21-17, 21-19.
When the tournament served off on Saturday, the Jankeys defeated Millet and Burnley 21-11 and 21-16 and won their other match against Wooding and Joseph by default 21-0 and 21-0 in Group A.
In Group B, the Morrisons beat Dickson and Mc Carthy 21-11 and 21-14 and James and Newsum 21-10 and 21-7 after Darion Sparks and Josie Cedeno defaulted their pool matches, while Dickson and Mc Carthy beat James and Newsum 21-4 and 21-9 in their other match in the pool.
