Cyclist Kylee Young

Melina Lopez and Kylee Young were both unstoppable in their respective categories – Tinymites and Juvenile Females at the T&T Cycling Federation’s National Track Cycling Championships, which were held at the National Cycling Centre in Balmain, Couva.

Both were crowned national champions at the weekend. Lopez, the Valkyrie’s rider, held off Christa-Marie Julien for the title in the tinymites 3-lap event, as well as in the individual pursuit tinymites females’ race.

The usually prolific Lopez then returned to the tracks to beat Julien a third time for the gold medal in a 750-metre individual pursuit by posting a time of 1:01.02.

Julien crossed the finish line at 1:15.77 for the silver medal for Madonna Wheelers, while Tyra Titte of Rigtech Sonics claimed the bronze medal.

Young, representing the Madonna Wheelers CC, sprinted to her national crown by beating Shameka Hoyte in an eighth-lap grind in the juvenile females. However, Hoyte got her revenge in the individual pursuit by taking the win in the 750-metre time trial. Hoyte took the third-place bronze medal, while Rayann Sheppard of the Rigtech Sonics improved her performance to take the silver medal.

Young had the last laugh, though, in the individual pursuit, posting a time of 3:03.11 for the top spot. Hoyte secured the runner-up spot in 3:04.32, while Sheppard was third (3:05.46).
