Antigua and Barbuda Falcons coach Paul Nixon has accused Cricket West Indies (CWI) of being "disrespectful" and "unprofessional".
His ire came as a result of allrounder Justin Greaves' unavailability through injury. Greaves has not played in any of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) matches to date and has not played any cricket since the West Indies series win against Pakistan at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy (BLCA) in Tarouba, San Fernando, a little over two weeks ago.
Nixon spoke to reporters after his team went under to the Trinbago Knight Riders for the first time on Wednesday night at the BLCA, where he vented about not knowing the correct extent of the Barbadian’s injury.
"I'm very disappointed that we've had no communication with CWI in their backroom department for Greaves to come in to us a bit injured, more than a bit injured. So, that was disappointing. And just before the game, we found out these things.
"So, for me, that was a bit unprofessional and disrespectful, in a way. But we moved forward," said Nixon.
“He's had an injection. That hasn't worked. I've been a bit disappointed by how he's come back from West Indies (international) cricket, if I'm being brutally honest.”
Nixon pointed to the lack of communication coming from CWI about the cricketer’s injury.
“The communication was poor around that,” Nixon said. “So, that's one of our international rounders out, which is tough. But we probably haven't posted the runs we'd have liked to have done today.”
Former T&T Red Force head coach David Furlonge disagreed with the English coach. He did not put the responsibility on the regional body to inform the franchise of the cricketer’s availability.
“It’s up to the player,” Furlonge said. “If I am injured, I will let my franchise know ‘I am injured, I can’t play’, or let my agent say.”
The Queen’s Park Cricket Club coach added that most players have agents who organise the day-to-day business for the players, including informing teams of their availabilities.
“These agents will organise signing he contracts and all that. Then the agent will probably come back and say he (the player) is injured,” said Furlonge, who added that the criticism of the Falcons' coach is unfounded.
