Past world cham­pi­ons field spe­cial­ists Gwen­dolyn Smith, Geral­dine George and sprint­er Mar­tin Prime will lead T&T in­to ac­tion at the World Mas­ters Ath­let­ics (WMA) World Mas­ters Cham­pi­onships which opened yes­ter­day in Swe­den.

Smith was the flag bear­er for the na­tion­al con­tin­gent of 20 ath­letes, com­pris­ing 12 men and eight women, rang­ing in ages from 35-39 di­vi­sion to 85-89 cat­e­go­ry, who par­tic­i­pat­ed in the pa­rade dur­ing the open­ing cer­e­mo­ny at the main sta­di­um in Gothen­burg.

To­day, Smith will com­pete in the 60-64 age-group women’s shot put event and George in the 50-54 women’s javelin throw.

Prime will lead the sprint­ers fac­ing the starter in the men’s 60-64 100 me­tres. The oth­ers com­pet­ing in the dash among the men are Mur­rien Mitchell and Garvin Farmer in the 45-49 di­vi­sion, Ray­mond Smith (60-64), Rumal­do Nor­eiga (65-69), and Os­wald Rogers (85-89). In the women’s ver­sion of the race, Michelle Sturge-White will rep­re­sent T&T in the 55-59 di­vi­sion.

Al­so in ac­tion to­day is an­oth­er field ath­lete Cheryl An­drew-Reyes, who will con­test the women’s 65-69 shot put.

Joyce Thomas, an­oth­er past world cham­pi­on, is al­so part of the unit. She will com­pete in two events, the shot put and dis­cus, in the 75-79 di­vi­sion.
