Past world champions field specialists Gwendolyn Smith, Geraldine George and sprinter Martin Prime will lead T&T into action at the World Masters Athletics (WMA) World Masters Championships which opened yesterday in Sweden.
Smith was the flag bearer for the national contingent of 20 athletes, comprising 12 men and eight women, ranging in ages from 35-39 division to 85-89 category, who participated in the parade during the opening ceremony at the main stadium in Gothenburg.
Today, Smith will compete in the 60-64 age-group women’s shot put event and George in the 50-54 women’s javelin throw.
Prime will lead the sprinters facing the starter in the men’s 60-64 100 metres. The others competing in the dash among the men are Murrien Mitchell and Garvin Farmer in the 45-49 division, Raymond Smith (60-64), Rumaldo Noreiga (65-69), and Oswald Rogers (85-89). In the women’s version of the race, Michelle Sturge-White will represent T&T in the 55-59 division.
Also in action today is another field athlete Cheryl Andrew-Reyes, who will contest the women’s 65-69 shot put.
Joyce Thomas, another past world champion, is also part of the unit. She will compete in two events, the shot put and discus, in the 75-79 division.
