T&T's Gwen­dolyn Smith won gold in her open­ing event at the North and Cen­tral Amer­i­ca and the Caribbean Mas­ters (NC­C­MA) Cham­pi­onships in Ciu­dad Juarez, Mex­i­co on Fri­day.

Smith topped the women's 55-59 age cat­e­go­ry dis­cus throw with her best ef­fort mea­sur­ing 30.12 me­tres, among the eight par­tic­i­pants. The 59-year-old beat Mex­i­can pair Rosa Coro­na Mar­tinez (58), who was a far-off sec­ond with 22.86m to cop sil­ver and Isela Canon Sanchez (58) was the bronze medal­list with 20.74m.

Smith, the lone com­peti­tor from T&T, was sched­uled to be back in ac­tion os Sat­ur­day at the Re­gion­al Cham­pi­onships, seek­ing to reach the top of the podi­um in two more field events, the shot put and the javelin throw. Her fi­nal event will be the throws pen­tathlon on Sun­day.
