T&T's Gwendolyn Smith won gold in her opening event at the North and Central America and the Caribbean Masters (NCCMA) Championships in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico on Friday.
Smith topped the women's 55-59 age category discus throw with her best effort measuring 30.12 metres, among the eight participants. The 59-year-old beat Mexican pair Rosa Corona Martinez (58), who was a far-off second with 22.86m to cop silver and Isela Canon Sanchez (58) was the bronze medallist with 20.74m.
Smith, the lone competitor from T&T, was scheduled to be back in action os Saturday at the Regional Championships, seeking to reach the top of the podium in two more field events, the shot put and the javelin throw. Her final event will be the throws pentathlon on Sunday.
