T&T’s beach handball men’s team will be out for revenge when they come up against round-robin second-placed finishers Venezuela (4-1 and eight points) in one of two semifinals at the inaugural Under-23 Sand and Beach Games at the Cancha Balonmano—Multisport Park in Santa Marta, Colombia from 11.30 am on Wednesday.
This after T&T won their must-win final round-robin clash with Colombia 2-0 (16-10, 24-14), on Tuesday, to finish with a 2-3 win-loss record and four points, level with Dominican Republic and Colombia.
However, T&T by virtue of is positive goal-difference of plus-7 (190-183) secured the third spot on the six-team round-robin table ahead of Colombia who finished at minus-one (183-184), with the Dominican Republic fifth with a goal-difference of minus 30 (161-191) while Mexico who meets Colombia in the other semifinal topped the standings with a perfect 5-0 mark and a maximum of ten points after defeating Dominican Republic 2-0 (19-12, 26-16) in their final pool match.
Venezuela also won 2-0 (26-14, 18-12) over Puerto Rico, who ended winless (0-5) and will meet Dominican Republic in the fifth place playoff from 10.45 am today.
The winners of today's semifinal will face off in the final at 5.30 pm while the losers meet in the bronze medal encounter at 4 pm.
Also today, T&T will begin its Beach Volleyball campaign with Britany Choon and Tysan Selvon contesting the women’s competition, and the pair of Nicolas Williams, and Joshua Persaud in the men’s category at the Santa Marta Multisport Park “500 años” in El Rodadero.
The T&T women meet Jamaicans Alexandria Ashman and Chevonna Lewis from 8 am before completing their Group C schedule against El Salvadoreans’ Gabriela Funes and Sofia Velasquez on Thursday from 8 am, followed by a 1.30 pm meeting with Cubans Gisel Armenteros, and Jennifer Rivera.
The T&T men start their Group C campaign against Nicaraguan brothers, Christopher Cascante, and Jefferson Cascante at 9.30 am before meeting US Virgin Islands’ Andreas Bumps, and William Clements on Thursday from 11 am, and Curacaos’ Leonard Elsevijf, and Timothy Van Henneigen from 3.45 pm.
At the end of the round-robin groups, the top two teams from each of the four groups will qualify for the quarterfinals. T&T will also compete in surfing and open water swimming in Colombia.
