T&T jockeys land 6 winners at Hastings

T&T jock­eys Bri­an Boodram­s­ingh, Ki­mal San­to, Ker­ron Khelawan and Learie Seecha­ran com­bined to land six wins over the big week­end at Hast­ings Race­course in Van­cou­ver, British Co­lum­bia.

Boodram­s­ingh had two win­ners, Khelawan two win­ners, and San­to and Seecha­ran each scored once.

For­mer cham­pi­on jock­ey Boodram­s­ingh cap­tured the biggest prize on Sat­ur­day when he guid­ed the 12-1 shot Wealthy Tex­an to 2 3/4 length suc­cess in the 6 1/2 fur­longs con­test. The 12-1 shot made all the run­ning for a su­perb vic­to­ry in the CAN $100,000 Jack Di­a­mond Fu­tu­ri­ty.

That day in the sec­ond race, Khelawan was the first to en­ter the win­ner's en­clo­sure af­ter he guid­ed Ma­jes­tic Street to vic­to­ry for train­er Pat­ty Leaney who had a won­der­ful week­end. Boodram­s­ingh fin­ished third aboard Driller and paid $6.90 to show. That was to be a warm-up for Boodram­s­ingh. In the third event, the 23-year-old rid­er con­tin­ued his good form and fin­ished sec­ond aboard Ed­die Girls. The pay­ment was good on the 16 -1 shot and she paid $7.10 to place and $2.60 to show. Boodram­s­ingh con­tin­ued his good form in the fourth aboard Bode­ga and fin­ished sec­ond in the fourth race.

How­ev­er, in race six, the Jack Di­a­mond Fu­tu­ri­ty, Boodram­s­ingh land­ed the win­ner aboard Wealthy Tex­an for train­er Mel Snow. He paid $27.00 to win, $8:30 to place and $5.40 to show.

In the eighth race, San­to was in the win­ner's en­clo­sure as he brought Ac­ci­den­tal Hero with a sus­tained run to win go­ing away for train­er Lar­ry Grieve and own­ers Wyn Rac­ing Sta­bles. Third place was tak­en by Boodram­s­ingh who was aboard Space.

In the ninth event, San­to was again in the frame but on this oc­ca­sion, he was third aboard Wise Mar­ket.

The fol­low­ing day, San­to set out to win the open­ing event aboard In­dyet­ta but he was reeled in with three fur­longs to go my by Lucky Force with lead­ing rid­er Amadeo Perez aboard.

The sec­ond event on Sun­day saw Khelawan land an­oth­er win­ner, this time for train­er Tara Neigel. Khelawan was astride which won com­fort­ably for own­ers Fee­don Farms Ltd. That made it four wins for the Trinidad rid­ers.

In the next race, Pret­ty Aria made it five wins as Boodram­s­ingh guid­ed the Robert Over­schott-trained horse to vic­to­ry for the Iron­side Sta­ble Lim­it­ed. How­ev­er, in the fifth race on the sev­en-race card, Seecha­ran fi­nal­ly put his mark on the card, af­ter a qui­et week­end.

Seecha­ran's 21-1 shot Star Fi­nal­i­ty scorched up the straight to win eas­i­ly by 4 1/2 lengths for train­er Pat­ty Leaney and own­er Joe and Glo­ria Rus­so. Seecha­ran saved the best for last. In the fi­nal event on the card, Boodram­s­ingh fin­ished sec­ond end­ing a great week­end for the Caribbean and Trinidad jock­eys.

When Guardian Me­dia spoke to San­to, he said, "I am rid­ing well and I thank train­er Lar­ry Grieve for giv­ing me the op­por­tu­ni­ty to ride Ac­ci­den­tal Hero. I am hap­py to land an­oth­er win­ner for the sea­son. Yes, I am hap­py and cer­tain that I will ride many more win­ners. When I asked for more Ac­ci­den­tal Hero quick­ened away in style."

For­mer cham­pi­on jock­ey Boodram­s­ingh won the rich­est race on Sat­ur­day aboard Wealthy Tex­an and said: "He broke smart­ly and made all the run­ning. When I came to to top of the lane, he was well in com­mand and came home strong­ly."

The lo­cal rid­ers are look­ing to keep the T&T flag fly­ing in Cana­da.
