T&T Under-21 netballers were defeated by Singapore 67-58 in extra time in their 13th to 16th semifinal play-off at the Netball World Youth Cup in Gibraltar, on Friday.
The encounter ended tied at 52-52 at the end of regulation time and had to be decided in extra time.
The Singaporeans netted the first goal of the match before T&T responded and went up 3-1. The Asian side pulled a five-goal (12-7) lead. However, the local girls converted their shots to cut the lead to one, 14-13, at the end of the first quarter.
On the resumption, the Kalifa Mc Collin-coached team tied the score at 14-14 and engaged in goal-for-goal exchange with matching score cards at 15-14, 16-16, 17-17, 18-18 and 19-19. Singapore then regained the lead and was five points up at 30-25 thanks to their short and quick passing approach. The team in red, white and black was down 30-27 at halftime.
Captain Maikea Bramble led the fight for T&T. The goal-shooter was converting her attempts to keep her squad in contention for its second win of the tournament. However, their opponents were also hitting their shots as the gap opened up to seven at 44-37. Bramble responded by nailing more goals to cut the deficit to five (44-39) at the end of the third period.
The local representatives pushed again in the final quarter, cutting the margin down to one (51-50), eventually tying up the scores at 52 all, sending the match to extra time to decide the winner.
Singapore went in front 58-55 at the end of the seven-minute first period and outscored T&T 9-3 in the second period to win 67-58. Bramble finished with 51 goals from 52 attempts, while opening goal-attack Jada Hamilton closed with six in 10 tries. Keiko Roy, who replaced Hamilton as goal-attack in the fourth quarter, netted the other goal from five attempts.
