T&T Red Force continued their impressive start to the 2019 Colonial Medical Insurance Super50 Cup when they defeated Guyana Jaguars by six wickets in their second match at the Queen's Park Oval in Port-of-Spain on Saturday night.
Tion Webster cracked 87 to lead the rout as the Red Force made light work of Guyana's score of 187-9.
Young pacer Anderson Phillip also advertised his skill for all to see in the Jaguars’ innings, as he grabbed four wickets for 44 runs in an inspiring spell to peg back the visitors at the end of 43rd over, after the match was cut down due to a two-hour rain delay.
The inform Jeremy Solozano, who scored 102 not out in the opener against the Windwards on Thursday, then pounced on the visitors’ bowling early to give Red Force a good start. He scored 39 off 55 balls with four fours and featured in an opening stand of 124 in 18 overs with teammate Webster.
When Solozano left it was all up to Webster, who smoked 87 off 60 balls with three sixes and 11 fours. Webster, who was not selected by his franchise Barbados Pride, is on loan to the Red Force.
At the end to bring home the win inside 36 overs was Darren Bravo, who followed his unbeaten century in the first game with 26 not out.
Earlier, with the weather around T&T Red Force won the toss and decided to field first.
Guyana was under earlier pressure with the loss of Tagnarine Chanderpaul (7) just before the rain interrupted the Guyana innings and the aggressive Chandrapaul Hemraj (21) went soon after the restart.
The T&T slow bowlers were the ones to put the brake in the early piece and with quick runs needed to post a significant score, Anderson ripped the visitors apart. The work of spinners Jason Mohammed, with 1/12 off five overs and Yannick Ottley, 1/14 off six overs, was significant in stifling the Guyanese outfit. Their combined work of 11 overs for 26 runs and two wickets was special on the slow Oval track.
Most of the Guyana players got starts but could not continue and this led to an overall sloppy display and a score that is woefully short against an inform batting team like the Red Force.
Jonathan Foo, dusted out and brought back into the fold, got 36 with two sixes and two fours. He and Ramaal Lewis, with 28 runs from 17 balls, threatened to post a competitive score but their ambitions were cut short by Phillip and the runout route.
Down at the Brian Lara Academy, the USA, playing their first match of the tournament, had to sit and watch the rain as their clash against the West Indies Emerging Players was kept back. In at the end, it was decided that play would start at 7.02 pm and the Emerging Players won the toss and decided to bowl first.
