Adam Wyatt registered a hat-trick to lead the Glen “Fido” Francis-coached T&T Junior (Under-21) “Calypso Stickmen” to a convincing 5-0 drubbing of Guatemala for a second straight win in the Junior Pan Am Challenge at the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex Hockey Centre in Wildey, Bridgetown, Barbados, on Wednesday (March 12).

Come-from-behind 2-1 winners over Guyana in their last outing on Monday to follow up on their 1-1 draw with host Barbados, the junior "Calypso Stickmen" needed all three points to keep their hopes of a top-two finish in the round-robin alive to contest the gold medal match.

Seven minutes into the contest, Wyatt fired in the opener from a penalty-corner set play which proved to be the only goal of the first 15-minute quarter.

Cameron Adamson doubled T&T's lead in the 22nd and four minutes later, Wyatt got his second of the match from another penalty corner for a 3-0 half-time lead.

The third quarter was again dominated by T&T but the goal spree never materialised with Nicholas Whiteman's 36th-minute penalty corner the only goal to push the margin to 4-0 before Wyatt completed his hat-trick in the 59th minute to put the icing on the 5-0 win which carried T&T's points tally to seven from three matches, two behind unbeaten Brazil who clobbered Barbados 9-2 in yesterday's late match.

Venezuela is third with six points after a narrow 1-0 win over Guyana, who stayed fourth with three points.

Speaking after his team's victory, Francis said, "It was a good game for the guys as we dominated in all departments of the game. We have to work on our penalty corners and our finishing other than that it was a solid game overall."

Looking ahead to their remaining matches against Puerto Rico and Brazil, Francis, a former national goalkeeper, said, "If the guys play with a little more confidence we will do well. A few minor improvements to make to our game and things will be good for tomorrow's match."

On Thursday (March 13), T&T faces Venezuela from noon. A win for the Caribbean men will seal a spot in the gold medal encounter and a birth at the Junior Pan American Games in Paraguay this August.

In the other men's matches carded for today, Guyana plays Brazil at 2 pm followed by Guatemala and Barbados from 4 pm.

Following tomorrow's rest day, Brazil and T&T will clash in Saturday's opener from 8 am, followed by Guatemala and Venezuela from 10 am, and Barbados and Guyana at 2 pm.

With the drawn result, the Kristin Thompson-coached “Calypso Stickwomen” moved to four points from four matches and in the fourth position on the six-team table, eight points adrift of leader Mexico, who blanked Puerto Rico 3-0 in their top two clash to secure their spot in the gold medal match with a maximum of 12 points.
