As part of its philanthropic programme, the Ministry of Tourism is sponsoring the Special Children Carnival Band from the Lady Hochoy Vocational Centre–D Kananka Maoli Tribe...Hawaii 2010.
The Lady Hochoy Vocational Centre provides much-needed quality care and service for individuals who have physical and mental disabilities.
In announcing the sponsorship of the mas presentation, Tourism Minister Joseph Ross indicated his great joy "to afford the children the opportunity to truly enjoy Carnival, our major national festival." He said: "What is really astonishing is that all the costumes are made by the children themselves, thus facilitating the learning of new skills, such as wire-bending, art and craft, and copper plating."
Minister Ross expressed great respect for the excellent work done at the centre and said he truly appreciated the dedication of the teachers and support staff. Last year, the Lady Hochoy Vocational Centre placed second in the NCBA Mini School Band Mas Category and the centre's King and Queen of the Band copped several special prizes.
