Stephen Ames failed to make a comeback in the Farmers Insurance Open, when he shot a one-over 73 in the final round on Sunday at Torrey Pines. The Canada-based Ames could not recover from the slip-ups over the previous three days, and finished with an overall score of four-under 284 and tied for 33rd with three others on the leaderboard.
He finished nine strokes behind American winner Ben Crane, who shot a 70 to win one stroke clear of the field. Starting on the front nine in the US $5.3 million tournament, Ames started with a double-bogey on the first hole, saved himself with a birdie on the fourth hole before bogeys on four of the nxt five holes left him wobbling. Ames however, recovered with birdies on three of the next five holes to finish strongly.
