Rainbow Sports and Cultural Club handed Stag Trinidad Northern Rugby Football Club their second defeat of the season when they beat them 24-15 at the Marabella Recreation Ground over the weekend. Rainbow have not been having a fantastic season thus far in the Toyota Championship Division League which speaks to the inconsistency of a team that is littered with raw rugby talent. However, on the day they are able to field all of their talent, including National and West Indies player Mark Hamilton, who was once regarded by South African great Chester Williams as one of the best defenders on the International Rugby Board (IRB) 7's circuit, Rainbow can compete with the best teams in the country.
Northern badly missed their playmaker James Walkins and scrumhalf Jonathan O'Connor and they are seeing their Toyota Championship League title hopes set like the evening sun on a cloudy day. Caribs Rugby Football Club and the Harvard Club were handed their victories with bonus points over Police Rugby Football Section and the Defence Force Rugby Team respectively, ensuring that Caribs remained on course for retaining the league title with Harvard challenging for the runners up spot. In Senior Division action on Sunday, Royalians Rugby Football Club comfortably defeated Caribs Second XV 28-7. Royalians' tries came via James Phillip, Kelson Figaro, who had a brace, and scrumhalf Darryl Gittens. National player Felician Guerra had a personal tally of eight points from the boot with two penalties and a single conversion to finish with 50% success between the sticks.
Carlton Felix was outstanding for Royalians at the outhalf position with a high percentage of passes completed. Caribs Second XV, despite having top division players Andre Cabrera, Miguel Lara and former National player David Apang, could not get past two phases with possession. Breaks were rarely made and when they were, it was from one man - Caribs Second Row Jason Riley, who had a stormer of a game. There were flashes of brilliance from Andrew Taylor and Zane Campbell but not often enough to trouble the scoreboard. The Caribs' Number 10 Sean Caesar kicked away possession too often which played right into the hands of the Royalians, who moved the ball nicely down their backline to release National and West Indies player Figaro, who is no stranger to try scoring. Both teams were previously beaten but now only Royalians holds that accolade in the Senior Division.
