Jumper Ayanna Alexander captured T&T's third medal at the 19th Commonwealth Games yesterday in New Delhi, India.
Alexander leaped 13.91 metres to secure the silver medal in the Women's triple jump event at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
The Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games bronze medallist, finished behind Trecia Kaye Smith of Jamaica, who recorded a leap of 14.19 to take gold. Third was Tabia Charles of Canada with an effort of 13.84 metres.
Today, Alexander and her teammate Rhonda Watkins will look for success in the women's long jump event.Over on the track, quartermiler Lalonde Gordon clocked 46.33 seconds to finish fourth in his heat in the men's 400m semifinals. His time was not good enough to earn him a "fastest loser" sport in today's the final.
T&T has already secured two bronze medals, thanks to Aaron Armstrong in the men's 100m final and team of Roger Daniel and Rhodney Allen in the 50m Pistol Pair. T&T men and women teams went down again in the hockey competitions at the Maj Dhyan Chand National Stadium.
South Africa defeated T&T, 5-3 in the men's Pool B match with Gareth Carr scoring twice for the winners.Forward Wayne Legerton scored a double and his captain Kwandwane Browne for the losing T&T outfit. Captain and striker Surinder Kaur scored four goals in India's convincing 7-0 win over last-placed T&T women's team which is yet to register a goal in its three matches played.
The T&T unit lost to South Africa (12-0) and Australia (11-0).
At Talkatora Indoor Stadium, Tariq Abdul Haqq defeated Pakistani Meer Khan, in Super Heavy, to advance to the quarterfinal round. He will fight Joseph Parker of New Zealand, tomorrow.
Another local boxer Aaron Prince was not as successful in his welterweight division second round contest, losing to India's Dilbag Singh, 11-3. T&T cycling team of Njisane Pillip, Christopher Sellier and Thireef Smart, placed fifth in the men's team sprint on the final day of track cycling at the IG Sports Complex.
Emile Abraham was also active yesterday, competing in the men's 20-km scratch race final but he did not finish the event. Young swimmers Joshua McLeod (23.86), Caryle Blondell (24.18) and Cadell Lyons (24.30) finished 18th, 22nd and 25th, respectively, in the men's 50m freestyle heats at Dr SPM Aquatics Complex. The top 16 advanced to the semifinal round.
