DirecTV W Connection assistant coach and former St Lucia international, Earl Jean has credited his team's coach and countryman Stuart Charles-Fevrier for their 2-1 win over Costa Rica's Deportiva Saprissa in their must win Concacaf Champions League Group A match at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.
The win for the "Savonetta Boys" ended a ten-match winless and five-match scoreless streak in the tournament and put the T&T club on three points from three matches, three behind Wednesday's opponent, while idle Santos Laguna of Mexico are second on the table on goal difference (+3 to -7) over W Connection.
Speaking after the win, which avenged a 4-0 first round loss to the Central Americans, Jean, a former club captain said, "Since our last game against Saprissa I think he watched the video about 50 times,"
"He (Fevrier) knew that they are a very good team and that we were up for a big challenge and he simply told our players to relax, enjoy, play with confidence, and that we are representing T&T and our club, and the players carried out the system well. It was a tactical game."With regards to the late red card shown to midfielder Gerard Williams, Jean said, "It was tough and a bit harsh for Gerard. It's a tough loss for us because Gerard brings a lot to our team.
"He is a player that uses heart and soul for the team, but I think we have young players around that will come in and give us what we want because coming from this victory I can only see positives for us."Jean was also impressed with the display of 34-year-old striker Andre Toussaint who recently re-joined the club after five years.
His brilliance as an attacking midfielder/false 9, after replacing Jhonatan Gerhardt in the 70th minute, galvanised W Connection in the latter stages."He showed that he is the right fit for the "Savonetta Boys" although missing the target on two excellent scoring chances from close up."He (Toussaint) brought a different dimension to our team and we have a lot of respect for him as he is a major signing for us and it's a big plus for us because Toussaint is quality."
A disappointed Jeaustin Campos, the coach of Saprissa noted that all his team can do now is await the final outcome of matches to secure qualification."We expected to win here and it was a good game for us, but it was a shame we missed a lot of chances to score and they (W Connection) did not and that's it."
"W Connection played good," added Campos. "Defence and on the counter attack. We already knew it was going to be tough. W Connection are a good team. We knew it wasn't going to be the same game as the first leg," ended Campos.
