Japanese soca singer Ann-G will get the chance to represent her country in this year's Play Whe International Power Soca Monarch final on Fantastic Friday, February 28, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain.Ann-G, who performed We Love Carnival in the semifinal, was one of the surprises in the final lineup announced yesterday to battle against joint defending champions Machel Montano and SuperBlue. Lyrical and Snakey also bettered some bigger names to make it the Power final.Not so surprising was the name of Grenadian star Hollice Mr Killa Mapp, who has been enjoying a bumper season with his hit Rolly Polly.
Mapp and Erphaan Alves, who qualified for the Digicel Groovy Soca Monarch final, were also announced yesterday as the contenders for the Carib Brewery Breakout Artiste of 2014 title at a media launch at the Hospitality Suite, Carib Brewery, Mt Hope.The artistes were chosen by text messages of over 1,500 voters following their performances in the semifinals.The International Soca Monarch competition is expected to finish at 3 am on Carnival Saturday and fans have until then to choose between Alves and Mapp. To continue voting, fans were yesterday encouraged to go to either the Soca Monarch or Carib Brewery Facebook pages or text to the code 1005.
Carib sponsorship and promotions manager Collin Murray said the company,which has been affiliated with the Soca Monarch event since its inception, was proud to be a part of the new category."We are helping to redefine the soca industry by becoming the first breakout sponsor," Murray said.International Soca Monarch operations manager Harande Elie said the new category had resulted in enhanced performances during the semifinal round.
