Governor of the Bank of Guyana, Lawrence Williams, died yesterday after a long battle with cancer.Williams, who was appointed to the position in June 2005 spent almost all his working life in the Central Bank.In 1979, after successfully completing the Bachelor of Social Sciences Degree (management), he joined the Bank of Guyana as an assistant principal in the Exchange Control Department and was responsible for implementing and maintaining the system for monitoring exports and collection of export receipts.
As Governor of the Bank of Guyana, Williams was responsible for the overall management of the Bank of Guyana and was chairman of the board of directors, responsible for guiding the deliberations of the board with a view to ensuring the achievement of the bank's principal objectives of fostering monetary stability and promoting credit conditions conducive to growth.
