The unheralded but popular California Women's Windball Cricket League bowls off its 25th season with a round-robin competition at Macaulay Park, California, today, starting at 12.30 pm.A total of 12 teams, drawn from communities throughout Trinidad, will compete for a first prize of $1,000, with defending round-robin champions Tamana United intent on retaining their title. Teams will face three overs each.The opening day will also feature a special prize for the Best Dressed Team.
Founder and co-ordinator of the league, Wilton Griffith (Flex), is the driving force behind the longevity of the league. "We are celebrating our 25th anniversary this year but it has been a hard grind to reach this stage. We do not get any meaningful sponsorship or financial support. We are really doing it for the love of the sport and to offer the young ladies an avenue to express themselves in a healthy activity," Griffith said.
All competitions will be played at Macaulay Park, with the league competition commencing next Saturday with three matches, starting at 3 pm.Double-defending champions Tamana United will be favourites to retain their league title and take the $6000 first prize. League matches will be 15-overs per side.The Knock-Out competition, which will be played on completion of the league matches, carries a first prize of $2,500.
