As the fire spread rapidly inside her home, wheelchair-bound pensioner Rosilia Mitchell had to be lifted bodily and brought to safety, where she watched the fire sweep through three houses, displacing four families.
Two of the houses were destroyed by the time firefighters arrived, but the third was partially gutted.
The officers came from the Chaguanas Fire Station with an ample water supply, but by then, the fire had already become uncontrollable.
Rosalia sat in her wheelchair, watching the ruins while a team of fire prevention officers conducted investigations to ascertain the cause of the blaze.
Her daughter, Allison Corbin, said the blaze started at the home of her brother, Winston Kissoon.
"That was about 11:20, and my brother wasn't home. We had to get my mother out because she cannot walk," Corbin said.
Her stepfather, Daniel Mitchell, said they were thankful Rosilia was saved.
"My son had to pick her up. It was not easy. I am still traumatized from that," he exclaimed.
A source said firefighters came from Chaguanas to respond to the blaze. Daniel appealed to the public to call 461-2893 to assist the families. Investigations are continuing.
