The Haitian-American chair of the Brooklyn Democratic Party, New York State Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, has congratulated the projected election winners across Brooklyn and New York City in Tuesday’s general elections.
“The Brooklyn Democratic Party looks forward to working with our victorious newly-elected and re-elected Democratic officials in the New York City Council, Kings County Civil Court, Supreme Court and Surrogate Court,” Bichotte Hermelyn, the daughter of Haitian immigrants, who represents the 42nd Assembly District in Brooklyn, told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) on Wednesday.
“The party is elated by significant Democratic victories in tightly-contested elections for City Council seats representing Brooklyn,” she added. “I congratulate Susan Zhuang, who made history by being elected as the first Asian-American Democratic City Council Member from Brooklyn.
“Susan is a dedicated community activist and public servant with over a decade of experience working in the State Legislature, who will build bridges across our diverse communities,” Bichotte Hermelyn continued.
She said that Chris Banks, the son of a Trinidadian immigrant, is “an ardent advocate who will usher in a great new era of uplifting leadership for the 42nd Council District”, after defeating longtime Council Member Charles Barron in the Primary Election in July.
“The City Council continues to gain diverse and qualified representation in Brooklyn that will keep uplifting all Brooklynites and improving our city,” Bichotte Hermelyn said.
She also applauded the victory of six Supreme Court Justices (Kings County): Justice Heela Capell, Justice Sharon A.B. Clarke, Justice Rachel Freier, Justice Caroline P. Cohen, Justice Saul Stein and Justice Joanne D. Quiñones.
“We are proud to see the party’s endorsed slate of diverse, highly experienced, and capable Supreme Court Justices win the election – all of whom will administer equitable justice for all Brooklynites,” Bichotte Hermelyn said. “As a party, we are proud to have Brooklynites bringing reform and change to the bench.”
