The ashes of deceased Secretary General of the Maha Sabha Satnarayan Maharaj will be poured into the Caroni River in keeping with his wish that he wanted to go into the Gulf of Paria.
Maharaj was cremated yesterday on the banks of the Caroni River and his son Vijay confirmed to Guardian Media that in keeping with his father’s wishes, his ashes will be poured into the Caroni River.
Maharaj’s family are expected to return to the cremation site early this morning where a prayer ceremony will be conducted using milk, honey and ghee, as they gather the ashes to pour it into the Caroni River.
Because of the sacredness of the ceremony, the family said it will be private.
This is one of the last rites to be performed for Maharaj who died just after midnight last Friday.
Special provision is made at the Caroni Cremation site on the northern side where steps lead down to the river making it easier for families to walk into the water to pour the ashes of their loved ones.
