Investigations are continuing into Monday’s shooting of a teacher from the Mamoral RC Primary School, minutes after he left the institution for the day.
Preliminary information suggested it may have been an inexperienced hunter who was responsible.
The Standard Three teacher, who lives at Mc Bean, Couva, was reportedly driving a blue Suzuki Vitara south along the Main Road, Mamoral, at 3.10 pm when gunshots rang out.
The 48-year-old realised he had been shot in both hands and alerted a female colleague who had been driving behind.
His colleague took the injured man to the Chaguanas Health Centre, where he was treated before being transferred to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope.
The victim was said to be in a stable condition up to yesterday.
Chief Executive Officer of the Catholic Education Board of Management (CEBM), Sharon Mangroo, yesterday confirmed the teacher was in a stable condition and recuperating.
She said, “We wish him a speedy and complete recovery.”
Indicating the CEBM was awaiting the findings of the investigation before making any pronouncements, Mangroo said they too had been told the incident may have been accidental.
If this was indeed true, Mangroo questioned, “The concern is what safeguards are in place to protect people from inexperienced hunters?”
