An autopsy on the body of Zahra Ali, the pregnant woman who was found dead in her Gasparillo home on December 27 has found she died from placental abruption.
Her death has been ruled as natural causes.
Ali, 28, was found by her six-year-old son in a bedroom on December 27 and was last seen alive the night before.
She was buried on Tuesday after an autopsy was done earlier in the day.
According to Mayo.com, placental abruption is an uncommon but serious complication of pregnancy. Placental abruption is when the placenta partially or completes separates from the wall of the uterus. This can decrease or block the baby’s supply of oxygen and nutrients and cause heavy bleeding in the mother.
Although the cause is often unknown, trauma or injury to the abdomen or rapid loss of the amniotic fluid that surrounds and cushions the baby in the uterus can be possible reasons for placental abruption.
When she was found dead, the police were called in and ruled that her death appeared to be suspicous. Officers ordered that her body be removed to the Forensic Sciences Centre for an autopsy to be conducted.
Ali’s relatives reached out to Guardian Media on Thursday, saying despite the findings of the autopsy they do not believe her death was natural.
Her sister, Sherry, claimed Ali was the victim of violence.
“We didn’t get any justice for Zahra,” Sherry said.
Sherry said before the autopsy was done on Tuesday, she and other relatives were told there was a ‘mark’ across Ali’s stomach, leading them to believe she endured some violence that had led to her death.
However, Ali’s sister lamented that her family could not afford to have a private autopsy done.
“They buried her on Tuesday, we had no one to turn to and had no money to request another autopsy,” she said.
