A bush fire is being blamed for the destruction of an auto garage just off the westbound lane of the Churchill Roosevelt Highway in Maloney yesterday.
The owner of Hi Tech Auto Garage estimates damages to be around $.5 million, as ten cars were completely destroyed, three cars scorched and the garage’s office destroyed.
According to Rolston De Couteau, friend of the garage owner, a bush fire started in a vacant piece of land south of the garage. Due to high winds, the fire quickly spread to the garage’s compound.
“About 1.20 pm, a bush fire started and is like in a split second everything just happen. We reach across here and tried to out the fire but the water line burst so no water. The container catch on fire and it just happen so fast. All we could have done was leave the compound and call the fire services,” De Couteau said.
The owner said he is currently assessing the situation and would contact his customers soon.
