Chaguanas businessmen are operating as if a curfew is in effect, says Baldath Maharaj, head of the Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce (CCIC).

Speaking with Guardian Media on Tuesday, Maharaj said the CCIC has not received any reports on the number of raids or successes resulting from the State of Emergency (SoE). He revealed businessmen are closing shop earlier than usual.

“They plan to do that for the next few weeks to come,” he told Guardian Media.

Maharaj said the CCIC wants the Ministry of National Security to function better so nationals can feel a greater sense of security.

“Crime is getting so bad that a lot of people are even getting numb to it,” he observed.

“Normally, a murder 10 years ago would have been very troubling. Now, it’s treated as another event. We are getting so numb to it,” he added.
