A file is expected to be submitted to the DPP today regarding a Coast Guard officer who was detained by police after discharging a firearm along Ariapita Avenue, Woodbrook on Sunday.
The Coast Guard officer has spent the last two nights in police custody. This, as investigations continued into the incident.
In addition to the police probe, the T&T Defence Force (TTDF) has also been notified.
Police reports stated that a 35-year-old woman from George Cabral Street, St James was driving a beige coloured Suzuki Vitara, with a 27-year-old woman from Ali Drive, San Juan, El Socorro as the passenger when around 12.30 pm they turned onto Ariapita Avenue from Alfredo Street.
It is alleged the driver had to slam on the brakes as a 34-year-old Coast Guard officer attempted to stop the vehicle.
It was reported the serviceman who had been dressed in blue and white Muslim garb, had been holding a gun in his hand.
Fearing for their lives, the driver began reversing along the Avenue as the officer reportedly ran after them, shooting.
The scared woman drove to the St James Police Station to make a report. However, police said the driver and the other woman were further traumatised when they saw the alleged suspect also at the station making a report.
While no one was injured, the Vitara’s front right tyre was damaged. Insp Ishmael and a party of CID officers visited the scene where five spent 9 mm shell casings were recovered.
Police officers detained the serviceman and also seized a firearm; 33 rounds of 9 mm ammunition; and two magazines.
The Muslim attire that was suspect allegedly had been wearing at the time of the shooting, was later found in his vehicle according to police.
