Coast Guard officer detained after shooting

A file is ex­pect­ed to be sub­mit­ted to the DPP to­day re­gard­ing a Coast Guard of­fi­cer who was de­tained by po­lice af­ter dis­charg­ing a firearm along Ari­api­ta Av­enue, Wood­brook on Sun­day.

The Coast Guard of­fi­cer has spent the last two nights in po­lice cus­tody. This, as in­ves­ti­ga­tions con­tin­ued in­to the in­ci­dent.

In ad­di­tion to the po­lice probe, the T&T De­fence Force (TTDF) has al­so been no­ti­fied.

Po­lice re­ports stat­ed that a 35-year-old woman from George Cabral Street, St James was dri­ving a beige coloured Suzu­ki Vi­tara, with a 27-year-old woman from Ali Dri­ve, San Juan, El So­cor­ro as the pas­sen­ger when around 12.30 pm they turned on­to Ari­api­ta Av­enue from Al­fre­do Street.

It is al­leged the dri­ver had to slam on the brakes as a 34-year-old Coast Guard of­fi­cer at­tempt­ed to stop the ve­hi­cle.

It was re­port­ed the ser­vice­man who had been dressed in blue and white Mus­lim garb, had been hold­ing a gun in his hand.

Fear­ing for their lives, the dri­ver be­gan re­vers­ing along the Av­enue as the of­fi­cer re­port­ed­ly ran af­ter them, shoot­ing.

The scared woman drove to the St James Po­lice Sta­tion to make a re­port. How­ev­er, po­lice said the dri­ver and the oth­er woman were fur­ther trau­ma­tised when they saw the al­leged sus­pect al­so at the sta­tion mak­ing a re­port.

While no one was in­jured, the Vi­tara’s front right tyre was dam­aged. In­sp Ish­mael and a par­ty of CID of­fi­cers vis­it­ed the scene where five spent 9 mm shell cas­ings were re­cov­ered.

Po­lice of­fi­cers de­tained the ser­vice­man and al­so seized a firearm; 33 rounds of 9 mm am­mu­ni­tion; and two mag­a­zines.

The Mus­lim at­tire that was sus­pect al­leged­ly had been wear­ing at the time of the shoot­ing, was lat­er found in his ve­hi­cle ac­cord­ing to po­lice.
