Residents of Paradise Heights, Morvant, rushed to lock themselves in yesterday morning, as a gunman opened fire on a man as he used the bathroom.
Police said Peter Ferdinand Shoy, also known as “Froggy,” a contractor, was shot multiple times at 9.30 am, as he was in the ground-floor washroom of Building D.
Residents of the housing scheme reported hearing gunshots and rushed to check, following which they found Shoy on the ground in a pool of blood.
As a party of officers descended on the quiet development, residents were later forced to open their doors for uniformed officers to search their homes.
This, even as the parameters of the State of Emergency (SoE) were being simultaneously spelt out by acting Attorney General Stuart Young during a media briefing at the Ministry of National Security.
Armed officers began knocking on doors as they conducted house-to-house searches. Utilising at least two K9 dogs during the searches, officers were also seen lugging a battering ram along.
Welcoming the lawmen as he opened his door and walked out, gesturing for them to enter and search the ground-floor premises, an elderly resident who requested his name not be published, said, “I glad for this kinda visit because the place under a kinda meditation right now.
“I welcome this move,” he added, “They doh need a warrant to come by me.”
The man went on to say, “I paying rent and living in jail...they shoulda do this long time, not just here in Paradise, but all over.”
Asked about the crime situation and the decision by the Government to introduce a curfew-less SoE, the resident suggested Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley seriously consider “dropping the old age pension to 15 because they not reaching age to draw nothing.”
Referring to Sunday’s shooting at Prizgar Lands, Laventille, which claimed the lives of five men and left a sixth nursing injuries, he joked, “The Government getting all that pension money...come on, drop the pension, why you raising it higher?”
“Is only young people dying,” he claimed.
“It sad, it painful.”
Saying he was uncomfortable coming out before 6 am every day, the 63-year-old, who has been living in the area for over 40 years, said, “Everybody up here pleased with this ... if anybody is against this, is because they dealing with illegal stuff.”
