Officials within the T&T Police Service (TTPS) have dismissed claims that a curfew has been enforced at Rifle Hill, Belmont, by members of the Six Gang.
The denial followed a social media post yesterday that warned, “The fellas from the 6 Gang in riffle hill give Belmont a curfew. They saying anyone under 35 they find outside after hours getting it.”
Contacted yesterday, a senior official within the Port-of-Spain Division said while they were aware of the post, there was no evidence to prove there was any merit to it.
Indicating that the post was one way to create mischief and panic, the official said, “Based on intelligence, there is nothing to state that any curfew was put in place.”
Snr Supt of the Port-of-Spain Division, Ali Mohammed, told Guardian Media, “My officers, together with the CID, the IATF and the GEB, will be continuing patrols in the Belmont area, but not because of the post.”
He added, “Based on the recent spate of murders, we initiated a plan whereby our presence will be felt.”
Mohammed advised residents to go about their daily routine.
The situation developed hours after Kevin Granger was killed while standing near the St Francois Valley Road Plannings around 5.45 pm Tuesday.
Police said a black Nissan Teana drove up to Granger and three gunmen got out and shot him several times before getting back into the car and escaping.
Passers-by took Granger to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Officers of the Port of Spain Task Force found the getaway car abandoned at the corner of Siparia Hill and Belgrave Street. Inside the car, police found three spent 5.56 shells. At the crime scene, police found 15 spent 5.56 shells.
The vehicle was towed to a police station where further analyses will be done by crime scene investigators.
Granger’s death came one day after Kevon Moses was gunned down outside the Belmont Police Station moments after he was released from custody.
Police from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region I are investigating both killings.
In a response to the issue yesterday, the TTPS communications unit acknowledged that police were currently addressing violent activity in the Port-of-Spain Division.
It said officers had been deployed on the ground to address the issue and security measures were also implemented to address any reports of violence in the Belmont area.
