The bandit who was caught on camera dancing in a bar with a high-powered rifle during a robbery in Debe earlier this week has been arrested.
He is believed to be one of four suspects held with two firearms by officers of the Debe Highway patrol and Highway Patrol Task Force on Thursday night in Debe.
The 33-year-old suspect, a fisherman of Penal, was seen dancing during the robbery at Laura’s Bar in which the bandits also helped themselves to a quantity of alcohol.
However, he was among four suspects arrested around 10:20pm after officers who were on a joint exercise saw three objects thrown out of the left rear window of a light blue Nissan Almera heading in their direction along the southbound lane of the Solomon Hochoy Highway.
The items fell into the bushes. The officers prevented the car from moving, approached and ordered the four occupants to exit the vehicle. Upon searching the bushes, the officers found a blue lunch bag containing $979 and a white bag with a AK47 and a revolver loaded with 18 rounds of 7.62 ammunition and six rounds of .38 ammunition. A black plastic bag contained a quantity of auto electronics and accessories, including five cellular phones and eight packs of cigarettes.
A cutlass was found in the car. The officers then searched the men and found a large sum of money including TT$12,754, $US 29 currency, $50 Suriname currency and $20 in Venezuelan currency. Inquires later revealed that the suspects and the recovered items fitted the description of a report of robbery earlier that day at BW Imports Ltd at Papourie Road, Diamond Village, San Fernando.
The officers subsequently executed search warrants at the homes of the suspects but nothing found nothing illegal. The other suspects include a 20-year-old labourer of Point Lisas, a 43-year-old equipment operator of Barrackpore and a 31-year-old labourer of Diamond Village, San Fernando.
The suspects are expected to be placed on identification parades in relation to several other robberies. Supervising exercise and searches were Insp Cadette, Ag Sgt Jairaj, Cpl Maharaj, Ag Cpl Lulcool and Ag Cpl Dhanasar.
