Sahadaye Ramnath, 63 was chopped about her face, head, hands and body. The assailant is believed to be a 92-year-old man who is known to her.
The victim’s daughter, Zeena Kadil, 45, said Ramnath was involved in an altercation with a man sometime after 6 pm at her Longdenville Road home when the man allegedly pulled out a cutlass and started chopping her.
Kadil said her mother knew the man and they might have been involved in a property dispute.
“I got a call from the Chaguanas Health Centre, my brother tell me mother get chop and thing and the house burn down. When I went there I saw my mother she get chop across she face and one of she finger cut out and she get chop across the body,” she said.
Kadil said her mother ran to the nearby police post seeking help. It is believed that her house was then set on fire.
Her mother is warded at the Eric Williams Medical Science Complex in serious condition.
Brenda John, councillor for Enterprise South/Longdenville North in the Chaguanas Borough Corporation, visited the scene. She said a suspect was apprehended by villagers after he fell into a drain and was then handed over to the police. He was taken to the Chaguanas Health Centre for treatment.
John said Ramnath had only been discharged from the hospital on Thursday after she suffered a mild heart attack.
