A Point Fortin resident fatally stabbed truck driver Ronald Marchan four times during an altercation on Wednesday, as he delivered goods to a supermarket in the area.
Marchan, 42, of Mota Trace, Tabaquite, died from his injuries shortly after being taken to the Point Fortin Hospital. Investigators said he was stabbed in the chest, abdomen, and upper arm.
The attacker later surrendered to police and handed over a bloodstained folding knife.
Police said around 7 pm, Marchan arrived at Tanner Street in a refrigerated truck to deliver goods to the supermarket. He remained in the driver’s seat while two coworkers exited the vehicle. Around 7:50 pm, the suspect approached Marchan, asking him to move the truck but Marchan explained the truck was refrigerated and he could not turn off the engine.
An argument ensued, and the attacker left but he returned 10 minutes later, resuming the confrontation.
Police said Marchan opened the driver’s door during the altercation, and the attacker allegedly began stabbing him. The suspect then walked away, and Marchan was transported by employees of the supermarket to the Point Fortin Hospital. A video of the attack was recorded on CCTV footage.
Doctors treated Marchan for multiple stab wounds, but he was pronounced dead at 8:48 p.m.
The suspect later went to the Point Fortin Police Station, where he admitted to the stabbing and handed over a bloodstained folding knife. Officers arrested him and obtained the weapon as evidence.
Crime scene investigators processed both the scene at Tanner Street and the body at the hospital. An autopsy will be done at the Forensic Science Centre. The suspect remains in custody.
