The Downtown Owners and Merchants Association (DOMA) is advising the business community—especially those from Charlotte Street eastwards—that in anticipation of stormy weather, precautions should be taken, especially given the potential risk of an overflow of the East Dry River.
In a statement, DOMA said those living in boundary with the Dry River, particularly on Piccadilly Street between Park Street and Duke Street, also should be on full alert as to the levels of water in the river, if and when the rains begin.
The business group said the possibility of debris and/or sludge becoming lodged under any of the several road bridge crossings at Park Street, Duke Street, Besson Street and South Quay is an ever present risk in the event of persistent rainfall.
It added that this risk is a result of debris, bamboo, tree branches, sludge etc. that are carried in the flood waters from areas in the northern range down into the Dry River and such debris can cause serious risk of overflow conditions at the bridge crossings that traverse the Dry River.
"Additionally, businesses and residents on South Quay should also be vigilant regarding flash flooding especially during heavy rains in high tide conditions. No harm can come from preparation and caution," DOMA said.
The Association also urged businesses to remain alert and in touch with official announcements from Government agencies, the OPDM and the Met Service.
