A fire at an el­der­ly home short­ly af­ter mid­night in Point Fortin has claimed the life of a 76-year-old for­mer ca­lyp­son­ian.

The re­mains of Michael Cor­mun al­so known as 'Gal­ba', were found af­ter fire fight­ers ex­tin­guished the blaze.

Ini­tial re­ports stat­ed that short­ly af­ter mid­night loud ex­plo­sions were heard com­ing from an apart­ment in a se­nior cit­i­zens com­mu­ni­ty in Techi­er Vil­lage.

Res­i­dents sprang in­to ac­tion af­ter they saw the apart­ment on fire. They called the emer­gency ser­vices and tried to ren­der as­sis­tance.

Fire­fight­ers from the Point Fortin Fire Sta­tion re­spond­ed and ex­tin­guished the blaze. In­ves­ti­ga­tions in­to the cause of the blaze are con­tin­u­ing.
