Gary Griffith is now acting as Commissioner of Police (CoP), as his three-year term has come to an end.

He will act in the role until the next CoP is appointed.

Guardian Media has been told that the Police Service Commission (PSC) has already completed interviews and assessments.

“So, basically, right now, it’s literally for it to go to Parliament, so currently, Griffith is on a ‘short work’ for a few days as acting,” a TTPS source told Guardian Media.

Griffith yesterday confirmed he was acting in the position as of yesterday but declined to comment further.

Contacted yesterday, former Police Service Commission member Martin George said recent incidents involving police officers may not impact Griffith’s application and review by the PSC.

“At first blush, it may not appear to do so, unless it can be shown that he is somehow responsible for or actively encouraged/condoned their behaviours in this regard; and I don’t think I have seen any evidence of such, so from where I sit, I cannot see these issues having an impact,” George said.

He said he also supports calls of former PSC members for greater transparency/clarity in the new CoP selection process.
