A homemade shotgun was seized during an anti-crime operation in the Point Fortin district as part of nationwide exercises following the declaration of a State of Emergency (SoE).
Investigators said around 10.30 pm on January 2, Snr Supt Thompson, Supt Cumberbatch, Asp Corrie, and Insp Prescott, as well as members of the Point Fortin Police Station, Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Divisional Task Force, Cedros Police, and the Canine Unit, conducted searches under Sections 8 and 13 of Legal Notice 240 of the Emergency Powers Regulation 2024.
Acting on a tip-off, officers searched an overgrown area off Beach Road in Chatham. Approximately 50 feet from the road, they discovered the shotgun hidden under a sheet of galvanised metal. The weapon was seized, but no arrests were made.
The operation ran from 7 pm to 11 pm. Police said several “priority offenders” were targeted, including a 55-year-old unemployed woman, a 48-year-old deportee, and a 24-year-old man. However, no illegal items were found, and no arrests were made. —RADHICA DE SILVA
