Officers from the T&T Police Service will soon benefit from additional training opportunities being offered by the Federal Crime Police Office/Bundeskriminalamt (BKA), based in Germany.
Talks about the training were held among Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Mc Donald Jacob, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany Deputy Head of Mission, Christoph Anto, and BKA Liaison Officer Daniel Janssen at the Police Administration Building, Port-of-Spain, on Tuesday.
A TTPS release noted that Anton said the opportunities being presented to local police officers will strengthen its operational capabilities to tackle pressing matters such as the proliferation of small arms in the country.
Janssen said the exchange of information between international policing organisations was crucial for combatting some of the major crime issues in the world, including terrorism.
He said officers from T&T are being invited to participate in a training course being held in Barbados soon and hoped they used the opportunity to network and strengthen their regional relationships.
Jacob said he was appreciative of the offers from the German Embassy and looked forward to local officers being exposed to how German police authorities conduct their operations, so they could learn and benefit from such exchanges.
He also expressed interest in deeper intelligence-sharing capabilities to deal with firearms-related crimes in T&T.
Both parties agreed to continue talks on the training opportunities to make them a reality.
Also in attendance at the meeting were Senior Supt Alicia Henry of the Special Branch, officers of Interpol and the Criminal Records Office and Assistant to the BKA Liaison Officer Andrea G Dominguez.
