A 30-year-old Barataria man, who ran away from police officers after being pulled over for reckless driving, has been fined $5,000.
Police said the incident took place on July 19, 2025, when W/Cpl Alves and PC Forde—two officers of the Transit Police Unit (TPU)—were on patrol along the Priority Bus Route near the Aranguez Savannah. They spotted a white Toyota Corolla speeding west along the route.
The officers chased the car to the Aranguez traffic lights and drove alongside it to get the driver’s attention.
Police reported that the driver saw them but swerved left to avoid being stopped, driving onto William Street before eventually being intercepted near an NP Gas Station.
The driver and his two passengers were ordered out of the car and asked to produce a Driver’s Permit and Certificate of Insurance. However, he only handed over his national ID card. When officers told him they still needed to see his permit, he ran off and escaped.
Checks revealed that the man had never been issued a Driver’s Permit.
Police later obtained a warrant and arrested him at his Barataria home last Friday.
He appeared before a Port of Spain magistrate on Monday, where he was fined $1,500 for driving without a Driver’s Licence and $3,500 for driving without a Certificate of Insurance.
